BCTMP method wins award

The 2005 Finnish Engineering Award went to a group from M-real Corp. in recognition of the development of an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly BCTMP process, which also conserves raw material. The process was been created for the specific needs of the paper and board industry. The prize is 20,000 euros.

The results of the work, described as a cost effective alternative to the chemical pulp process for the production of BCTMP, makes it possible to control pulp characteristics such as brightness, opacity and purity, taking into account the requirements of the end products. Both softwood and hardwood are used in the production process.

M-real Corp. says it is the world leader in applying the new BCTMP production methods in practice. The Joutseno mill, which came on stream in 2001, is the first in the world based on this particular technology. M-real is building a second BCTMP mill in Kaskinen. Once it comes on stream next autumn, M-real will be the largest producer of high quality BCTMP pulp in the world.
