SCA gets permit for biorefinery next to Östrand pulp mill

Sundsvall, Sweden - The Land and Environmental Court has granted an environmental permit to Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebologet (SCA) to build a biorefinery plant adjacent to Östrand pulp mill in Sweden.

Östrand has been proposed as a location because the expanded pulp mill enables the use of energy and secondary flows from pulp manufacturing operations, while also using by-products from other manufacturing processes and from forest operations. The company proposes developing renewable biofuels but also bio-products such as biochemicals and biochar.

The permit covers the new biorefinery operations as well as the necessary modifications required at the pulp mill to create the desired synergies between operations.

If the court’s decision remains unchallenged, the facility will likely be one of the first of its kind in the world.
