Lehigh Valley based Precision Roll Grinders marks 50 years

Lehigh Valley, PA-based Precision Roll Grinders, Inc. (PRG) is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a supplier of cylindrical roll grinds.

PRG was established on March 12, 1969 by the late business partners Dr. Adam Schildge, founder of Transmares Corp. and Conti Rubber Products (CRP Industries) and Dr. Gerhard Syrbius, former CEO of Hermann Berstorff, a manufacturer of heavy machinery in Hannover, Germany. The two joined forces when Renolit Corp. (later known as Reneer Films) based in Auburn, PA, was interested in purchasing machinery from Hermann Berstorff.

The partners founded PRG to serve the North American market and cut out customers’ transportation costs and downtime involved in sending rolls back to Germany to be serviced.

PRG opened its first location and corporate headquarters in Allentown in 1970. The first president of the company, George Maniatty, served for 32 years and built the foundation of PRG on a dedication to customers, pledging on-time, every-time delivery services. Ed Gumina is the current president and CEO.

PRG now has locations in Carrollton, GA, Lewisport, KY, and Texarkana, AR, to be closer to customers. By providing the best delivery times, tightest tolerances, and as the only company that can perform 3D grinding services, PRG lives up to its motto that No one even comes close to the quality that it provides. “The one common thing across all of our markets is our quality and our tight tolerances and we hold those with our machines, our people, our tools and our methods,” said Gumina.

In addition to its corporate 50th anniversary, PRG is celebrating Carrollton’s 30th, Lewisport’s 20th and Texarkana’s 15th anniversaries.

The company’s newest venture is to take its services worldwide. “The big change we are … making is … the need for our tolerances across the globe,” said Gumina. “We’ve started by going into Asia and Central America, and now we are going to provide service to South America.”

PRG says it is the most accurate (20-millionths-ofan- inch tolerance) large roll and cylindrical shaft grinding company in the Americas and one of only two in the world capable of that level of precision. It provides hot roll grinding and 3D grinding to customers worldwide in the pulp and paper and other heavy industries.
