Port Townsend migrates to ABB’s integrated control and safety systems

ABB Ltd., Westerville, OH, has supplied its Ability™ advanced digital services to Port Townsend Paper Co.’s mill in Port Townsend, WA, as part of a phased upgrade of its DCS which allows the mill to continue operations and avoid a weeks-long shutdown while ABB works during planned downtime.

ABB migrated the mill’s existing human machine interface (HMI) to ABB Ability™ System 800xA which serves as a control system, an integrated electrical control system, a safety system and a collaboration enabler with the capacity to improve engineering efficiency, asset utilization and operator performance.

The mill also added OPT800 Cook/B, the latest version of the advanced batch digester management system that sequences and schedules PTPC’s batch digesters to process wood chips into pulp more efficiently. Minimized kappa variation and steam leveling will result in reduced chemical and steam consumption. ABB Pulp and Paper Care is also part of the agreement to address customer needs such as Rapid Response and Lifecycle Management. ABB
