E.ON awarded major CHP contract by UK’s DS Smith
DSSmith, a London-based provider ofsustainable packaging solutions, and E.ON, an Essen, Germany-based energy company, have signed an agreement for the latter to construct astate-of-the-art combined heat and power(CHP) facility at DS Smith’s flagship Kemsleypaper mill in Kent, UK.
The facility will replace the existing CHPsystem and extend E.ON’s partnership at thesite with DS Smith for the next 20 years. Thenew plant will enable a carbon reduction of36,000 tonnes per year (t/y), the equivalent of30,000 medium-sized cars driving 10,000km/y.
Once complete, it will have an electrical capacity of 75 MW, generating steam and powerfor the mill. With 830,000 t/y of paper manufactured, the partnership will further improveresource efficiencies and contribute to DSSmith’s corporate goal of reducing carbonemissions by 30% by 2030.
The program will be one of E.ON’s largestorders in more over a decade; E.ON will finance, build and operate the CHP. The two-year construction phase due to start this yearfor commissioning in 2021.
