• Kemira Yongsan Chemicals Co. Ltd., Ulsan, Republic of Korea, has signed a deal with Yongsan Chemicals, a privately-owned chemicals company.

Kemira will make a multi-million investment in the joint venture and will have 35% minority share of the established company.

• In China, the JV is between Kemira TC Wanfeng Chemicals Yanzhou and Shandong Tiancheng Wanfeng Chemical Technology (TC Wanfeng), an AKD producer.

The China JV will mainly produce AKD wax and its key raw material fatty acid chloride (FACL). AKD wax, where the main component is based on renewable raw material, is a sizing chemical used in board and paper manufacturing to create resistance against liquid absorption. Kemira says it is the global market leader in sizing chemicals. The new company’s site is in the same chemical park as Kemira’s first AKD wax plant in Yanzhou, China.

The Chinese company will also produce polyaluminum chloride (PAC), a coagulant for water treatment. The production of chemicals will start in the second half of 2019. Kemira has 80% and TC Wanfeng 20% of the new company. Kemira’s 80% share is worth around €55M and it has an option to acquire TC Wanfeng’s 20% in the future.
