Valmet web monitor for Mayr-Melnhof Karton

Valmet will supply an IQ web monitoring system (WMS) for Mayr-Melnhof Karton’s KM3 board machine in Frohnleiten, Austria, to improve over-all production efficiency.

The delivery consists of a WMS with 51 cameras throughout KM3’s entire production process. The high-speed cameras will monitor critical process areas and help the operators to analyze the root causes of web runnability disturbances.

Valmet says that key benefits for the mill are faster break recovery and preventative troubleshooting with leading technology camera equipment and video analysis tools. With a trim width of 4.4 m, KM3 produces recycled and barrier coated cartonboard in the weight range of 230 to 380 g/m2.

Mayr-Melnhof Karton is part of Mayr- Melnhof Group said to be the world’s largest producer of coated recycled cartonboard with an important position in the production of virgin fiber cartonboard and the European leader in folding cartons. The group currently operates 44 production sites — seven cartonboard mills and 37 packaging plants - in 18 countries and employs about 9,500 people. In 2017, the group generated consolidated sales of EUR 2.3 billion.

Founded in 1888, the Frohnleiten mill is the parent mill of Mayr-Melnhof Karton and has the highest production capacity in the European cartonboard industry.
