SAICA chooses Pesmel for automated roll warehouse

Pesmel Oy, Finland, will supply a rack-type automated roll warehouse (ARW) to SAICA Paper’s El Burgo de Ebro mill, near Zaragoza, Spain. The mill’s three paper machines produce 1,300,000 tonnes (t) a year of board grades. The new ARW will also store and distribute rolls from the mill.

The automated TransRoll storage system will be erected right after the PMs in two phases. The existing system of manual clamp truck operated warehouses will be torn down to make space for the new TransRoll system; temporary storage will be erected adjacent to the existing warehouse to maintain storage capacity during construction. Phase 1 production start-up will be Q1/2019, and Phase 2 will follow. The total storage volume after both phases have been commissioned will be 70,000 t.

According to Kaj Fahllund, VP of Pesmel’s paper business, “The need for automated storage concepts in paper mills, both as intermediate roll storages between different production stages and as shipping distribution centers, is growing strongly.” The reason is a shift from bulk to more diversified production and the need to respond to customer orders within days instead of weeks.

Pesmel’s TransRoll ARW concept has a dozen in/out connections at different floor levels between the production and shipping operations. It can take production 24/7 in random order as it comes from production and distribute it to 6+6 truck loading stations according to the required truck load combinations.

On an average day, 200 – 250 trucks will visit the loading docks. Trucks arrive in random order and the system guarantees truck-specific loads will be ready to be loaded within 20 minutes after a truck reports to the mill gate. The 70,000-t warehouse covers only 10 000 m2 with a 7 t/m2 effective storage density. It also has 1000-t/h fullyautomated in/out handling and sorting capacity with four stacker cranes.

TransRoll ARW is equipped with the full Pesmel warehouse management system (WMS) which is connected to the mill information system to track roll flow and keep real-time storage inventory for the converting and shipping operations.
