Kruger dedicates PM10 linerboard machine at Trois-Rivières
On Oct. 24, Kruger officially dedicated Paper Machine No. 10 which was completely rebuilt to manufacture 100% lightweight and highstrength linerboard at its Trois-Rivières, QC, mill. It formerly made newsprint.
Well before work got under way on the $C250-million, Kruger’s engineers toured numerous manufacturing plants in North America and Europe to find the best technology for manufacturing 100% recycled lightweight and high-strength linerboard of the best possible quality.
Commercialized as XTR™, the new linerboard grades meet increasing demand for ultralight packaging without compromising on strength, performance or environmental footprint.
PM10’s annual production will total 360,000 tonnes of XTR linerboard, an exclusive product that Kruger Inc. is the first to manufacture in North America. A portion of the production will be used by Kruger’s packaging plants in LaSalle, QC, and Brampton, ON, while the remainder will be sold to packaging manufacturers across Canada and the United States.
Principal suppliers included Valmet who supplied the ~8.4-metre-wide (wire) machine plus automation and quality control systems and ABB who supplied and installed the machine and winder drive systems.
Announced jointly by Kruger and the Government of Quebec in September 2015, the project required some 500,000 hours of work over a 20-month period that ended in the spring when the machine entered its start-up phase. The project also consolidated 270 jobs at the mill, in addition to generating major benefits for the Mauricie region and Québec. More than 80 local businesses were involved in the project. Of the total budget, about $40 million were spent with local suppliers and $60 million with suppliers elsewhere in Québec.
Kruger Packaging makes containerboard and corrugated packaging from 100% recycled fibre. The Montréalbased company was created in partnership with Kruger Inc. and Investissement Québec – acting as the province’s agent – which has a 25% stake in its assets. Kruger Packaging employs some 800 people, including more than 600 in Quebec. Apart from Trois-Rivières, it operates the Place Turcot containerboard mill in Montreal, QC, and the LaSalle, QC, and Brampton, ON, packaging plants.
Kruger Inc. also has operations in British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Tennessee, Maine, New York, Virginia and Rhode Island in the US.
