Cascades making moves

Kingsey Falls, QC-based Cascades Inc. has announced two projects designed to modernize its assets and increase the integration rate between its primary production and conversion activities as well as being part of the reorganization and consolidate of its containerboard and packaging activities in the Northeastern US. “This investment will help us better serve our customers and boost our production capacity, thus increasing our market positioning,” said Mario Plourde, president and CEO of Cascades.

New packaging plant in NJ. Cascades said it will invest $US80 million to build a containerboard packaging plant in Piscataway, NJ. Manufacturing capacity will be 2.4 billion sq ft/y of corrugated packaging products. Start-up is scheduled for 2Q18. The project represents an increase in the integration rate of about 5%. The facilities will have a surface area of over 400,000 sq ft. The site has room for subsequent development.

Closure of NYC plant. Cascades will close its packaging plant in Maspeth, NY, as part of its plans for the Northeastern US. Output will be moved to other facilities. The current site has reached its physical limits and has already been put up for sale for $US72 million.

The plant, which employs 148 people, will close no later than December 31, 2018. Cascades will assess the possibility of relocating interested employees to its other facilities. The company will assist employees in their employment search.
