Tembec to spend $C136M in Quebec to up competitiveness

TEMBEC HAS ANNOUNCED A FOUR-YEAR $C136- million capital investment programme at its Quebec facilities to improve competitiveness, centered on its specialty cellulose pulp operation at the Temiscaming mill. Some sectors of the specialty cellulose market are experiencing growth in the 4%/y range.

The programme qualifies Tembec for electricity rebates applicable to large industrial power users under the province’s Electricity Discount Programme for Consumers Billed at Rate “L”. Tembec will be reimbursed up to $55 million or 40% of the $136 million.

The upgrades at Temiscaming include the long-planned replacement of 11 pulp digesters; work is already underway, with one digester already replaced. Other work will help to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The high-yield pulp and coated bleached board manufacturing facilities will also benefit from new investments as will the Matane high-yield pulp facility.
